Dominique Pifarély is a French violinist and composer born in 1957, renowned for his central role in contemporary European jazz. He began his career with classical training before turning to improvisation in the 1980s. He has worked with the likes of Louis Sclavis, François Couturier and Didier Levallet. His style combines expressive intensity, formal rigour and improvisational freedom. He has released several acclaimed albums on the ECM label, including Time Before and Time After and Tracé Provisoire. Pifarély likes to combine music and literature, notably in projects such as Archipels. He performs as a soloist, duo, quartet or variable-geometry ensemble. His music explores the frontiers of jazz, the contemporary and the poetic. He is also a committed teacher and a benchmark for European improvisation. Always active, he continues to record, create and transmit.
